Gulf of Finland information packages are now out
New Gulf of Finland information packages explore environmental challenges of the Gulf of Finland.
Aim of Project
Our ultimate goal is to improve the state of the Gulf of Finland through strengthened trilateral environmental co-operation within the gulf’s area.
At present, the co-operation is regarded as a sub-regional contributor to many processes aiming at the protection of the Baltic Sea, not least in the context of the implementation of the HELCOM’s Baltic Sea Action Plan. Additionally, marine protection objectives set forth within the framework of the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive as well as the Maritime Doctrine of the Russian Federation, EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region and the North-West Russia Development Strategy are taken into consideration.
Thanks to the co-operation and active role of the ministries of environment and various institutes, we have been able to study the Gulf as an entity since the early 1990s, which was not possible before. Our joint efforts have led to the implementation of several direct and indirect protective measures which direct research and decision-making towards a healthier gulf. In spite of the common work, there are still things to be done.
