Research and expert tasks

  • Impacts of land use, waste waters and climate change on aquatic ecosystems
  • Developing methods for aquatic restoration and abatement of diffuse pollution
  • Assessment of the IUCN Red List of threatened species (aquatic insects) and habitats (inland waters)
  • Development methods for biomonitoring and experimental research

Background

I have worked in the Finnish Environment Institute since 2004. I first held a joint research professorship between SYKE and the University of Oulu in the field of aquatic ecology. At that time, I also coordinated the development of the ecological classification of Finnish inland waters. In 2009, I moved to Jyväskylä to develop the ecotoxicology laboratory and related research activities. I also work in expert groups to assess the red list of endangered species and habitats. Along my career, the Finnish drainage basins have become familiar from South to North and from East to West.

Research projects

  • Network for small waterbodies and riparian habitats (HELPPI, The Ministry of Environment)
  • Catchment-level pilot of wood additions as a tool for controlling diffuse pollution in agriculture and forestry (PuuValuVesi, The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry)
  • Enhancement of forestry water protection and aquatic restorations via novel wood-based materials (PuuMaVesi, The Ministry of Environment)
  • FRESHABIT LIFE-IP -Co-operation for conservation of Natural Heritage of Waters -Koitajoki regional project (EU Life)
